Anyone of us is a download junkie, I admit, my iphone has tons of free applications, my PC is always on downloading mode, my n95 only has few apps because I need to buy application from telco's wap site... Imagine, what if telco give away phone applications for free, sound impossible right? but Globe breaks that common stigma that we need to buy application from time to time just to get our phone full potential, they offer free applications for our mobile phone which hmmm.... is very nice actually..... Just got a new info from kuya jep, Globe Telecom has finally launched their much awaited WiMAX (Worldwide Inter-operability for Microwave Access) service in the Philippines. Initially available in selected areas in South Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, Globe's WiMAX network is considered the first and biggest 2.5Ghz WiMAX 802.16e broadband network in South East Asia.

For only P795 per month, subscribers can get speeds of upto 512kbps.

For those people not aware of what is WiMAX, here
WiMAX, meaning Worldwide Inter-operability for Microwave Access, is a telecommunications technology that provides wireless transmission of data using a variety of transmission modes, from point-to-multipoint links to portable and fully mobile internet access. Windows 7 to come in six versions

Microsoft is to offer six versions of its next operating system. The different options for Windows 7, released in beta last month, will be for the benefit of both PC makers and end users, according to a Microoft executive.

Microsoft said today that it will aim Windows 7 Home Premium at the majority of consumers and Windows 7 Professional at businesses. That harks back to Windows XP , which had two main versions: Home and Professional.

However, Microsoft will maintain all of the four other versions it offered with Vista, a move that caused much confusion. These options will include the controversial Home Basic, the Starter Edition that was until now restricted to developing countries, Enterprise and Ultimate.

In contrast, Apple releases a single version of Mac OS X with every new release. It does have far fewer users than Windows, with some estimates claiming between 30 million to 50 million users worldwide today.

Level-Up did it again!

Few weeks ago, Kuya jep and Rocky saw the opportunity to nominate our Gaming site GameOPS in the Philippine Blog Awards, the criteria are Content 80% and Design and Usability 20%.

The list of finalist was released last Sept. 19, 2008. And guess what?, GameOPS didn't make it in the finals. HA HA HA! F&*%! when kuya jep informed me that GameOPS didn't make it, I told him that maybe it's not yet our time, but the thing is, he told me that one of the finalist only have 3 posts...... "3 POSTS?!" $#!T!!!! w@ttdehF@k!!!!!

Judging Criteria

1. Content - 80%
The post itself and all its totality from the headline to the manner and style of writing is considered. Content and how the content was presented is critical. It is the total package, from the headline to the grammar and even to the effective use of images and sound, that is considered. Content for content sake is not enough it must be told in a manner that effectively conveys the idea and leaves an imprint in the readers’ mind.

2. Design and Usability - 20%
This refers to aesthetic and usability features of the blog. Not only should it look pretty but it should also be functional and stress free to navigate within. Is it pretty and user-friendly?

The nomination period is from August 27 to September 2008. Last day of for submitting nominations is on September 15, 2008. last day of submitting is on September 19, 2008 at Midnight.

I've read an article from Macworld UK regarding Apple set to defy PC downturn.

"We believe Mac performance is due to several unique drivers that were not present in prior downturns. We anticipate that Apple will continue to grow at a multiple of the overall market for many years to come," Credit Suisse explained.

"First, Apple has successfully reduced the perceived and actual switching costs for Windows users looking to adopt the Mac platform. Second, Apple's support of the Intel architecture has levelled the playing field in terms of speeds and feeds comparisons between Macs and PCs.

"Finally, Apple's successful retail strategy has broadened the availability of Mac products and given Apple more control over the critical computer-selling process. Users can now explore the advantages of the Mac platform with highly trained Apple sales reps," Credit Suisse said

After buying the latest processor... motherboard.... video card..... suddenly Intel is planning to release their next generation processor... called Core i7... shux....... i hate technology! LOL!

Apple latest Chip gamble

Imagine in a future product of Apple, back in Power. (huh?). The company has already made major bets on Power, x86, ARM just this decade, and now they are planning to go back in Power again? What, no love for SPARC or MIPS?

Apple has paid P.A. Semi for 278 million usd for a new chip design, for mobile device to be exact, currently PA. Semi's PA6T-1682M is a great contender for the iPhone's current chip Samsung's ARM-620mhz processor.

According to some rumors, like Forbes reported that Apple plans to put its chips inside the iPhone, but several possibilities are being considered this morning, as the industry tries to digest this piece of news.

Here is the specs of the said processor:

but according to apple:

Apple's iPhone group almost assuredly doesn't want P.A. Semi's current product. The PWRficient PA6T-1682M is the only product listed on P.A. Semi's Web page. It's a dual-core 64-bit chip designed for high-performance computing and embedded applications--things like server appliances or sophisticated telecommunications gear.

For me, who still uses n90, always carrying a charger, a device using a high powered processor + 3G network + 802.11g = one of a hell power hog device! Good luck Apple!

Globe Platinum is just an overpriced Postpaid Line

My Dad and I got really frustrated a few minutes ago. His Globe Platinum is due for renewal and renewals for Globe Platinum subscribers mean free units. Free unit for my dad, or if successful, free for myself :D

Anyway I called Globe Platinum's Hotline through my dad's mobile and passed the phone to my dad. While my dad is talking to the CSR, he frowned and heard saying

"bakit rebate lang bibigay nyo sakin?"

my dad got mad, and he passed the mobile back to me saying,

"get her name, I'll go directly to globe and clarify this things!",

the CSR gave her name, "Joycee Arlos", anyway to cut things short,

I simply asked her, why there is no available unit for a platinum subscriber? she answered back,

"kasi po wala pa pong unit available ang pwedeng ibigay, rebate lang po binigay sa ngayon."

Then I put a little spice,

"what if mag aaply ako ng plan 1800, anong unit maproprovide sakin ng globe?",

then the CSR reply

"we have some available units for the plan 1800 sir," and then I replied back,

"wala kayong unit pero merong kayong unit na ma proprovide sa new subscriber?!, eh kung inoffer mo nalang saming 2 unit ng lower models baka matuwa pakami, pero sabhn mong walang unit para sa platinum?! 7 years na subscriber wala kayong mabigay?!, ayos ah!"

For the second time around globe platinum is playing hard to get to give phone to their loyal subscribers... anyway these phone are not actually free anyway, you're still paying it thru your monthly bills... what's the point of Platinum lines when you're getting bad service... nice one Globe...

Report: New Apple product will give your workouts that magic touch

After the Nike + iPod sport kit, Apple recently filled a patent to a device which the product appears to be an application that would require both a personal computer (reportedly both Mac and Windows) and one of Apple's iPod Touch and iPhone devices.

The desktop-based software would initially ask the user to fill out an extensive survey pertaining to health and lifestyle, as well as workout goals and preferences, and then determine a workout regimen that would then synchronize to the mobile handset for trips to the gym.

The four filings, each made on March 27, 2007, are credited to a number of Apple employees, including Glenn Gilley, Sarah Brody, and iPod chief Anthony Fadell.

Transmeta founder to join Intel

Dave Ditzel, co-founder of chip company Transmeta, is joining Intel's Digital Enterprise Group to work with Steve Pawlowski, one of Intel's top architects.

I remember that Transmeta was way ahead of its time in pursuing a low-power microprocessor strategy, attempting to break into the notebook PC and blade server markets with its Crusoe chip. (I also remember Leo Laporte in TechTV pluggin the Crusoe processor.) The trouble was, Crusoe's low-power design came at the expense of performance, and manufacturing issues--combined with Intel's swift embrace of low-power tactics--killed Transmeta's chances of ever making a dent into Intel or AMD's market share.

I was itching to blog about Tim Cumper but was busy for the past few weeks. For those of you who didn't know, Timothy Ellis Cumper created an imaginary grand scale scam. A scam he imagined being him the target.

I saw one of the Kuya Jep's post regarding Tim Cumper's stupid accusations regarding a scam involving a mere PHP100k, which converts to GBP1,219.00 (based from today’s exchange rate). Upon reading it, He reminded me of Wrency’s iodized salt deficiency days.

It’s kinda entertaining reading his replies to kuya jep, It really shows his stupidity or I should say his craziness! Accusing one of the famous actress in the Philippines, my goodness.... this guy really needs medical attention.

Since I'm a CCNA instructor, I'll be quoting one of his flawed assumptions.

SO - even if you believe all that tripe about IP addresses - let's look at the odds.

We are talking about the last two segments of the IP address only.

256 + 256 = 512/1

4 emails from this IP address.

2,048/4

So the odds are 2,048/4 against this happening at all - let alone on the same date.
Plus the fact that Noemi - the prolific and detailed blogger that she is - allows a mistake with the name of the dating site to get posted.
ie Dating Asia as opposed to DateInAsia (which she gets correct in her earlier preface to my letter.)
This remarkable coincidence also happened back in August - with an email - allegedly from one of Francis Jalbeuna's business associates.

COME ON - JUST WHO ARE YOU TRYING TO DECEIVE?

I have two words for you Mr. Tim Cumper, DHCP and SUBNETTING. 'nuff said.

Half of UK men would swap sex for 50-inch TV

In response to a survey of 2,000 Britons conducted by electronics retailer Comet, almost half of the men polled said they would give up sex for six months in return for a 50-inch plasma TV, according to Reuters.

Microsoft went public today (Friday in US) with a $44.6 billion cash-and-stock bid to acquire Yahoo.

Microsoft's offer, which was contained in the letter to Yahoo's board, amounts to $31 a share and represents a 62 percent premium over Yahoo's closing price on Thursday. Microsoft said it will offer shareholders the option of cash or stock.

Nokia to include Windows Live services in mobile phones

Putting aside its handset rivalry with Nokia, Microsoft on Wednesday announced it has inked a pact to put mobile versions of its Windows Live services onto handsets made by one of its chief competitors.

According to the deal, Nokia will start offering Windows Live Hotmail and Windows Live Messenger on its most powerful Series 60 handsets this year. Later in the year or early next year, the services will be made available on Series 40 phones.

Microsoft asked if they have similar plans with Apple's iPhone they've replied, "If the iPhone were ever to get any distribution, maybe."

Symantec Corp and Intel Corp are jointly developing security products that could be built into tiny computer microprocessors.

The program, dubbed Project Hood, is part of an effort by both companies to expand their use of virtualization technology, or using software to replicate entire computer systems.

Instead of designing the security software to run on Microsoft Corp.'s Windows or another operating system, Symantec and Intel are building it so it can directly interact with the Intel chips, with this move, the security features are running underneath the Operating System which means it will eatup less resources and with less human intervention.

The said product will be targeting the business sector but eventually also be release into the consumer PC

Oh well, after the introduction of ViiV and the vPro technologies, we might see the VnaV technolgy logo.

Which domain name just sold for $9.5M?

It's said that everything has a price -- and the price paid recently for the Porn.com Web domain is $9.5 million, cash.
In an announcement today, Pompano Beach, Fla.-based domain name registrar and reseller Moniker.com said Porn.com was bought by Detroit-based MXN Ltd., an Internet media and investment business. MXN is affiliated with Downloadpass.com, an adult movie download site and Pimproll.com, an adult Web site promotion company.
Monte Cahn, co-founder and CEO of Moniker.com, said in a statement that the $9.5 million price tag for Porn.com is the second largest ever paid for a domain name, coming in second to the $12 million paid for Sex.com in 2005 in a private sale. Cahn said the price for Porn.com is the largest ever for an all-cash transaction.
"The sale of Porn.com further reinforces the growing trend of businesses that place a high strategic value on generic domains related to their industry," Cahn said. "Porn.com will prove to be a valuable asset for MXN Ltd. because of its significant number of daily visitors, established type-in traffic [and the fact it's] the top domain in the adult industry."
The owners of MXN Ltd. could not be reached for comment today. But in a statement on its Web site, the company said it's not yet revealing its plans for Porn.com. "The possibilities with Porn.com are limitless," MXN said. "To rush its development just to get something brand new 'live' would be foolish. We will carefully evaluate our options before we decide the direction we wish to take it."
Porn.com was offered for sale at a live domain name auction in Las Vegas in March, but it never reached the reserve price after garnering bids in the $7 million range, according to Moniker.com. The sale was finally arranged this week after private discussions after that event.
Last October, the domain name Hell.com failed to sell in an online auction.
Another large domain name auction will be held June 19-22 at the World Association of Domain Name Developers conference in New York. Among the domain names to be offered for sale by Moniker.com are Bourbon.com, Horseracing.com, Student.com, Naked.com, Cardiology.com, Elections.com, BroadwayShows.com, Ethanol.com and Musicians.com.

Cheating on IT Exams May Cast Doubt on Their Value

Thieves, 'gunmen' look to profit from stolen technology certification tests

April 30, 2007 (Computerworld) -- The FAQ page of a China-based Web site promises to help its customers get IT certifications “with your least effort.” On the right side of the page, a shaded box makes an even more direct pitch: “Order our gunman service and you will pass. Obtain your certications [sic] at home without testing by yourself.”

The site and others like it are examples of an IT certification exam piracy market that is operating in plain sight. People looking to cheat on exams can obtain copies of them or simply offshore the work to so-called gunmen, who operate mostly in Asia and will take tests for clients at a cost of up to several thousand dollars.

The activities of exam thieves are creating problems for technology vendors and for the tens of thousands of IT workers and students who legitimately take the tests each year and don't want to see their certifications devalued by cheaters.

Many vendors are already being affected by organized efforts to steal their exams. Late last year, the Association of Test Publishers in Washington surveyed 77 companies, about 60 of which are high-tech vendors. About half reported that their exams were available for sale on the Internet. And 75% said they had encountered cheating on exams.

Gene Radwin, who manages development of certification exams at EMC Corp. and was involved in conducting the survey, said the storage and security vendor has found some of its certification exams for sale online. The tests being offered were out of date, Radwin said. But he added that attempts to steal exams haven’t been curtailed by any means.

“There is a concerted effort to identify the content of IT certification exams,” Radwin said. “It’s an ongoing frustration for all of us.”

Vendors say they are doing more to boost the security of their testing processes. Measures that some vendors have already taken include continually expanding the pool of test questions they ask and using forensics to identify anomalous results, such as if a user answers easy questions incorrectly but gets difficult ones right.

But the problem is being eyed with dismay by Brian Young, CIO at Creighton University in Omaha. IT vendors “need to learn from their higher education counterparts and clean up their act,” he said.

Young said he has heard from his own employees about the availability of IT certification test questions on the Internet. He doesn’t discourage workers from seeking certifications or looking for opportunities to get more training, and he may even ask them to share what they have learned with the rest of Creighton’s IT staff.

But Young doesn’t rely on a certification as proof of expertise in a particular technology. For instance, he said that if he is hiring someone for a networking job, he may ask the candidate to configure some routers or switches as part of the assessment process.

The motives for cheating on exams are easy to understand. IT job ads often list specific certification requirements, and promotions may hinge on certifications as well. No one interviewed by Computerworld could say how many people cheat to get certifications, but it is easy to find sources selling “study guides” or “practice tests” that may be based on stolen test questions.

Intel's Newest Weapon

Intel Corp. will begin producing its next-generation "Penryn" processors by the end of 2007, using greater power efficiency to push improved Core 2 and Xeon chips to speeds over 3 GHz, the company said Wednesday.

The Penryn chip will have better power management than previous Intel processors, with deeper sleep states than Core 2 Duo chips. Thanks to that efficiency, Intel plans to run its new chips faster than 3 GHz for desktop and notebook versions, reversing an industry trend of scaling back the processor speed in order to add more cores without creating too much heat.

In other improvements, Intel will use 50% more on-chip memory in Penryn chips than Core 2 Duo, allowing them to hold more data on the chip instead of spending time and energy retrieving it from the PC's main memory bank. Dual-core Penryn chips will have 6MB of Level 2 cache, while quad-core versions have 12MB. Intel said it also will speed Penryn front-side bus speeds to 1,600 MHz, instead of the 1,066-MHz or 1,333-MHz options now available, granting up to a 45% improvement for high-performance computing applications such as computational fluid dynamics.

Russia tops malware exploit league

Russia and Romania are the country domains most likely to host ‘drive-by’ web exploits, according to a new map compiled by McAfee using its SiteAdvisor toolbar.

McAfee SiteAdvisor, a free-of-charge plug-in for Internet Explorer and Firefox, rates sites on several criteria, including dangerous downloads, spam tendencies and hosted exploits. It then posts green, yellow and red icons on search results obtained from Google, Yahoo or MSN.

McAfee applied the results of its site scanning to come up with the Flash-based map, which will be updated monthly.

"When it comes to safety, it turns out that the Web is no different than the physical world. There are safe neighbourhoods and safe Web domains, and then there are places no one should ever visit," said Mark Maxwell, a McAfee senior product manager, in a statement.

The world's riskiest country domain was .tk, for Tokelau, a three-atoll group of islands in the South Pacific formerly known as the Union Islands. More than 10 percent of the .tk domains are pegged as dangerous, and it leads all others in the percentage of sites that harbour exploits.

Of the major top-level country domains, 5.6 percent of the sites in Romania (.ro) and 4.5 percent of those for Russia (.ru) were among the riskiest, said McAfee. The two nations also placed second and third, respectively, in the percentage of their country domains that host malicious code.

Microsoft: Relax, no patches next week

It's the first time in 18 months Microsoft hasn't issued a Patch Tuesday security update...

Microsoft will skip next week's usual Patch Tuesday because it has no fixes for users, the company announced today.

In its monthly advance notification bulletin posted earlier today, Microsoft simply said, "No new Microsoft Security Bulletins will be released on March 13, 2007."

It marks the first time in 18 months that Microsoft has not issued at least one security update in a scheduled patch rollout. Since January 2003, only three months have been sans security fixes.

Although no software will be patched this month, that doesn't mean Microsoft has nothing to do. According to security organizations, there are numerous problems still unfixed. eEye Digital Security's Zero-Day Tracker, for example, shows five vulnerabilities that have been reported to Microsoft but not patched. The SANS Institute's Internet Storm Center, meanwhile, lists nine bugs on its most recent The missing Microsoft patches chart.

However, Microsoft said it will issue several unspecified nonsecurity, high-priority updates.

Last month, Microsoft released 12 updates that fixed 20 vulnerabilities; in January, it issued four security bulletins and patched 10 bugs.

It is a combination of iPod, PDA, and a mobile phone, its like a XDA or a Dopod but the difference is that it has OSX OS, (im a self proclaimed Microsoft fanboy, but damn its cool!) but the bad part of it that it has only EDGE capability, not 3G which are now very common for PDA phones like Nokia and Dopods... Bad move for Apple if they want to sell this like hotcakes in Europe and Asia... tsk tsk tsk..... (~_~)

Nokia finally unveiled the successor of n93, with some few refinements like hmm it is much smaller than the n93 and n90, a newly designed keypad that looks like a Motorola razr, and an external OLED Display that has a glossy finish to name some few but what I like the most is that it is VOX service ready.

The days of big virus outbreaks are over, according to director of operations for McAfee's Avert Labs, Joe Telafici.

Telafici said at the recent AVAR (Association of Antivirus Asia Researchers) conference that today's cyber criminals don’t want to draw attention to themselves as the main motivation for cyber crime now is money, not fame, he said. They are "clearly getting more devious," he said, but law enforcement co-operation across borders is also getting more efficient.

Telafici’s team of around 100 security experts in 16 countries builds McAfee’s security content. But they also educate and co-operate with law enforcement.

Avert Labs has also made it ten security threat predictions for 2007:

The use of bots, computer programs that perform automated tasks, will increase. Botnetworks will also increase, but there will be a move away from internet relay chat (IRC) towards less obtrusive instant messaging and peer-to-peer communication.
The number of rootkits on 32-bit platforms will increase, but protection and remediation capabilities will increase too. Rootkits are becoming a de facto standard.
Vulnerabilities will continue to cause concern, fuelled by the underground market for them. Avert Labs thinks the number of vulnerabilities will grow because of the increased use of fuzzers -automated tools and technologies that allow for large-scale testing of applications - and “bounty programs” that reward researchers for finding vulnerabilities.
Identity theft and data loss will continue to be issues - computer theft, loss of backups and compromised information systems are at the result of these crimes.
The number of password-stealing websites will increase, using fake sign-in pages for popular online services such as eBay.
The volume of spam, particularly bandwidth-eating image spam, will continue to increase.
The popularity of video-sharing on the Web makes it inevitable that hackers will target MPEG files as a way of distributing malicious code.
Mobile-phone attacks will become more prevalent as mobile devices become "smarter" and more connected.
Adware will go mainstream, following the increase in commercial Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUPs).
Parasitic malware that modifies existing files on a disk will make a comeback.

Yahoo Messenger gets security update

Yahoo has issued a "highly critical" update for its popular instant messenger feature as it tries to combat security flaws that could allow an attacker to take over a user's system.

The flaws affect versions of Yahoo Messenger 5.0 through 8.0, according to a security advisory released Friday by Secunia. Windows users who were running versions of Yahoo Messenger before November 2 are advised to update to Yahoo Messenger 8.1.

A security flaw was found in the ActiveX control component of Yahoo's services suite that typically downloads with the Yahoo Messenger installer. The vulnerability could allow a buffer overflow to occur in the ActiveX control. A buffer overflow occurs when a computer tries to store too much data in a temporary storage area, resulting in a system crash or in allowing an attacker "back door" access to the system.

As a result of the ActiveX vulnerability, users could involuntarily be logged out of a Messenger session, have an application such as Internet Explorer crash, or have malicious code launch on their PC if they're lured to a malicious Web site, according to a security advisory released by Yahoo last week.

In the past, users of Yahoo Messenger have been the target of phishing attacks. Attackers would send a message to users that appeared to come from someone on their friends' list, and attempt to lure them to a bogus Yahoo site. The site would then prompt users to enter their Yahoo ID and password.

"Research firm Gartner Inc. predicts that Windows Vista will be the last big release of Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system.
The era of monolithic deployments of software releases is nearing an end, and Microsoft will participate in the trend toward more flexible updates, Gartner said in a list of forecasts for 2007.
Gartner also expects that the blogging trend will peak in the first half of 2007. Given the average life span of a blog and the growth rate of blogs, the research firm predicts the peak number of bloggers will be around 100 million at some point in the first half of 2007.
